If you want to put some fire back into your sex life, or simply take it to another level, the right foods can help you do just that. Candles and a Barry White album are fine for the moment, but the foods you put into your bodies on a consistent basis can make you look better, feel better, and improve your sex life dramatically.
There’s nothing better than giving your hot date or mate a romantic, home-cooked dinner, featuring some R-rated foods to help turn up the heat even more.
“There’s a growing body of evidence that some of the vitamins and components in foods can enhance sexual function and sexual experience,” says Cynthia Sass, RD (Registered Dietitian), author of “S.A.S.S Yourself Slim”. She says, “Studies show that certain foods or nutrients do play a role in boosting libido and supporting a healthy sex life.”
Here are some of the food ingredients that have been spoken about numerous times in aphrodisiac history, folklore, and traditions, and also have modern-day science to back up their claims.
At the same time, some foods can be mood and libido killers. This I reveal last.
The infamous strawberries have been associated with love making since the beginning of time. Here’s why. Good circulation is thought to be crucial for sexual functioning in both men and women, and strawberries are rich in antioxidants that benefit your heart and arteries.
Even better, they’re rich in vitamin C, which along with antioxidants, has been linked to higher sperm counts in men. Dipping the berries in dark chocolate which contains methylxanthines activates libido even more.
The worlds first physician and the architect who built Egypts first pyramid, Imhotep, prescribed honey for sexual vigor. Even later in history, according to an old French wives’ tale, a bee sting was supposedly like being given a shot of pure aphrodisiac. Sounds like fun to me! Bring on the Bee’s!
Since honey is made through pollination (sex), it has always been a symbol of procreation. In fact, the word ‘HONEYmoon’ got its name from ‘mead’, an alcoholic beverage made from honey given to the newly married. And as a result, Making love under the moon!
We cant talk aphrodisiacs without talking oysters. One of the most notorious aphrodisiacs, oysters are high in zinc and have a reputation for being great for love and fertility. Researchers recently found that oysters contain amino acids that quickly trigger production of sex hormones.
Sesame seeds are a great source of Zinc; and zinc is thought to be good for sexual health (it can help testosterone and sperm production in men). Albeit the No. 1 source of zinc is oysters. But really, how often do you eat oysters? Mix them into granola or sprinkle them into a healthy stir-fry.
The Ancient Aztecs of South America referred to avocados as ‘testicles’, because of their physical shape. But the scientific reason why avocados make a great aphrodisiac is that they are rich in unsaturated fats and low in saturated fat, making them good for your heart and your arteries. And anything that keeps the heart beating strong, also helps keep blood flowing to all the right places all night long if you know what I mean.
Pretty much all leafy greens are essential for sexual health because they help block the absorption of environmental contaminants thought to negatively impact our libido. However arugula packs a special punch when it comes to fighting off the poisons and chemicals that retard our sexual performance.
Arugula has been used as a natural aphrodisiac since the 1st century AD when Greek philosophers and others identified it as a food with the ability to increase libido. The Romans even consecrated arugula to the god Priapus, a god of fertility. Apparently, this is some really good stuff.
Red Chilli Peppers
This invigorating spice has an exotic reputation and a bright red color, which could be why it’s considered an aphrodisiac and a symbol of love. But there’s scientific backing, too. Chili peppers stimulate endorphins (the brain’s feel good chemicals), speed up heart rate and make you sweat, which all mimic how you feel when you’re aroused.
Skip the coffee after dinner and reach for a cup of chai tea instead. The typical spices in this brew-ginger, cloves and cinnamon-will get the blood flowing but the caffeine effect is less so you’ll still be able to drift off to sleep after your meal (or after a great session of love making).
The pomegranate has been long referred to as a culinary symbol of sex and fertility for numerous centuries, even millenniums. Some say the forbidden fruit of the Bible was not the apple at all, but a pomegranate fruit. These bright balls (PUNINTENDED) of love are filled with antioxidants which support blood flow. One study by The Male Clinic in California found that pomegranate juice had a positive effect on erectile dysfunction.
Just like Pomegranate, according to Dr. Oz, Pumpkin Seeds (which contain very high amounts of magnesium) helps raise testosterone levels by making sure more enters the blood stream. And thus naturally aiding and treating erectile dysfunction.
Now as far as worst foods for sex performance and mood, I will only touch upon a few today, and instead will post a completely new article regarding “The Worst Foods to Avoid in Order to Save Your Sex Life”. For right now, I will give you a couple of foods which we can begin to eliminate from our diet until then.
Steak (Worst Foods)
While meat does provide some protein, the problem is that meat also tends to be high in saturated fat and cholesterol. A meat-heavy diet is associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, health conditions that can affect blood circulation and sexual function.
In addition, a small study published in 2006 in Chemical Senses suggested that eating meat, results in, less attractive body odor. So not only will it decrease your sex performance, but it may spoil your entire meeting and encounter before you even reach the bedroom.
Alcohol (Worst Foods)
We’ve all heard about this one before! (Or worst yet, experienced it first hand… There is a mountain of evidence to support its negative effects on a strong erection and sex life so naming a study or two “wont be hard” (PUN INTENDED). But what I will say is that contrary to popular belief, alcohol is definitely not an aphrodisiac and can actually inhibit your ability to attain an erection and orgasm.
Excessive drinking is a common cause of erectile dysfunction, according to the Mayo Clinic. Because as the amount of alcohol in the blood increases, the alcohol decreases the brain’s ability to sense sexual stimulation altogether.
Too much alcohol gives Men what we call “Whiskey Dick”; the inability to attain an erection, or maintain a strong erection. This happens because alcohol causes the blood vessels to dilate, which influences the way the blood moves in and out of the penis. In addition, alcohol can dehydrate the body, decreasing blood volume while increasing the hormone associated with erectile dysfunction — angiotensin.
To avoid the dreaded “Whiskey Dick”, you don’t necessarily have to stop drinking alcohol completely. But you do need to practice moderation. And as you get older, start to deviate from it all together.
I hope these foods have helped you get a better idea of how to better your sex life and also what foods might be currently hindering your sex mood and performance.
